I don't think they'll ever add a gantt chart and to be honest I hope not. We use them for small projects, with small teams and adding Gantt charts would cause us to move off their platform to one of their competitors.

Hi, New Basecamp is good but it still lacks in many features like gantt chart, languages, inbuilt chat, time tracking, sub tasks etc.

We were using Basecamp for several years but recently (about a year ago) we implemented in our company another task tracking software solution from comindware. More functionality, more options and more innovative flexible technology ElasticData. If you haven't tried it yet - try.

I'm still a big fan of 37signals, although I cancelled my Basecamp account as well. They created really unique and intuitive product... that time. Now I expect more. I've recently started using KanbanTool - I absolutely love the interface. Hope one day I'll tell the same about Basecamp again.

uh, those blog posts were from 2007 it seems...which leads me to something that really annoys me. When was THIS post written? 2007, 2008, yesterday? without a date byline how am I to know the information I'm reading is still relevant today.

I'm sure there are good reasons for not including the date in a post, but from a user standpoint, it sucks.

btw, I use basecamp still - I agree, it does have it's downsides, but when used with some other external apps you can work around most issues. Never had any complaints from clients about being hard to use either. just my 2 cents

Whoa! Just saw this post and read through the majority of the comments. Lots of panties in a bunch. I've just recently started using Basecamp and there are a number of little things that bug me about it. One of them being that I can't believe I can't just type in a date, I have to pick a date from a pop-up. Really? Am I doing something wrong? We'll see how it goes.

There are many usability improvements that could be made to Basecamp. I'm surprised that there is not more organization built into it. The way it works there is no obvious place specific things end up so new users coming into an established project have to contact someone else to find out where to find things. (Yes, SOMETIMES you can find things in search but not always.)

I am with you on the use of the 'f' word. While even I sometimes let a cuss word slip there is no excuse for not catching that when you're writing. I believe it is disrespectful to your readers and inappropriate for mixed company. There is definitely room for a difference between how you talk when you're out with your drunken buddies and what you share in public.

We use basecamp at Social Media Magic to share ideas and track client contact. We have had no issues with them. I'm not really one to read their blog a lot, but it's possible that was just that particular writer's opinion. I wouldn't let the opinion of one writer turn me away from such a useful application. How's the new application working for you? I look forward to networking with you in the future!

Doug did you try any of these worthy competitors that posted below before you moved back to basecamp. Personally I was very fustrated by the lack of organization and lack of traction when I added Mac people in Basecamp. I finally stumbled on an integrated solution. I will call it a business ecosystem that allows coworkers, clients, consultants, vendors, freelancers, board members to get on the cloud collaborative bandwagon.
The product I am using has a great project / task management component, a scheduling calendar, work flow review process, contact management, forums, live chat, web cam conferencing, screen sharing as features that can be assigned to users and groups it is way cool. Personally, I use Basecamp because it was easier for my team to adopt. I think it's essential to have a cloud-based project management software.

I feel your pain about project management, I love it and it helps me a lot when doing the balancing act in web development. Joomla has a great one that goes on the back of the site and can be accessed through the front. I have given up setting this up on sites for clients, they just don't seem to use it. It so wonderful for keeping site assets together!

I will check out the iGTD I have been looking for something like this and I am excited about this tool

Check out www.teamworkpm.net - They have a Basecamp importer and these guys just ROCK! They took Basecamp and finally added in all the stuff we've been asking for.

This will be a question I'll soon have to answer, Mark. I'm fairly certain it won't be Basecamp - I'm more attracted to SaaS solutions that aggressively drive more features and integration into their applications. Currently, I'm not doing any project management - but that should change soon.

Nearly two years after this post, I'm interested to hear what you're using for project management / work tracking today.

Do you remain satisfied (from a solution perspective) with your decision to move away from Basecamp?

We've seen quite a few folks come our way (http://www.smartsheet.com) from Basecamp in the past year, some citing similar reasons to what you originally posted. Others appear to be looking for an online solution which is less click-to-edit.

FWIW, we just moved from Basecamp to SharedPlan. SharedPlan Central focuses on the planning side with decent execution support. Gantt charts, offline access with a native app for Mac and Windows and so far, no arrogance ;->

Hi Doug:

This post has been in play for awhile but I wanted to get my 2 cents in. We are very dependant on our PM software. Its chaos if we don't get our clients engaged and our team. Because of that dependency we use Vertabase. They give us great customer service, training and are focused on us - the way good SaaS products should be.
